How can I be an imposter in my own feelings?
Some of my earliest memories are watching cartoons, and having really really big feelings.
But at the same time, I was embarrassed about these feelings, because I didn't think I deserved to be sad. Dumbo's mom was gone, not mine. Mine was in the next room, lovingly making me lunch. I don't know why I felt like I needed permission to cry.
So I did the respectable thing- faked an injury instead. Every movie, every tragedy.
A flawless, sustainable plan in a home where I felt like I was always pulling off an emotional rouse-getting away with expressing my feelings one more time, unquestioned.
There's also a subtle nod to my grandma in this painting. She had a huge artistic influence in my early years, and painted flowers on nearly every surface of her home.
